an open house: the kitchen

family room | backyard | laundry/hall | back bath & bedroom | front hall & bath | workroom | living room

We shall begin the interior tour with the kitchen, the heart of any home.

View from the living room in to the kitchen/dining table. This first group of photos was taken at the beginning of December. Since then I've taken down that heavy, partly non-working lamp and replaced it with a pale orange paper lantern with a 40-watt bulb. A little less total light, but more of it gets to the tabletop.

Stepping through the door, looking down toward the family room. Turn to the left, and you see... um, pinkness.

My grandparents did this. Grandma says they were trying to match the weathered-brick colors in the fireplace. To my eyes, it didn't quite work. I can't remember for sure whether the cupboards used to be red or green when I was small.

I do like the clock, though. Sorry the pic is a little blurry -- I prefer natural light to the flash variety.

pans. The shelves and the island are a little more organized now than they were when I took the picture. Trust me.
